NADA Launches Trucks for Haiti Campaign
Relief workers need light trucks immediately to help get food and medicine to earthquake victims

Relief efforts for Haiti have ramped up following the creation of the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. But delivery of food, water and medical supplies has been constrained by a lack of trucks to distribute supplies throughout the capital of Port-au-Prince and the communities around the country.  Speaking at the World Economic Conference on Jan. 28 in Davos, Switzerland, President Bill Clinton said Haiti needed 100 light trucks “yesterday.”

In response, NADA is calling on all dealers around the country to answer this urgent need for trucks to deliver food and medical supplies to earthquake victims in Haiti. Since the earthquake in Haiti, the needs are staggering. But this is one big way dealers can have a tremendously positive impact on Haiti’s relief efforts. “The road to recovery in Haiti is long, but America’s new car and truck dealers can make a difference,” said NADA Chairman John McEleney. Help us mobilize Trucks for Haiti and get critical supplies moving to where they are needed most. If you can make a tax-deductible contribution of a small truck or cargo truck or a light pick-up truck, e-mail trucks@clintonfoundation.org.

The NADA Project in New Orleans is Complete

NEW ORLEANS – The Lusher Charter School, in the festive spirit and tradition of the Big Easy, dedicated its newly-renovated athletic fields, which were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, to one of its hometown heroes during a two-hour ceremony in October.

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees led the effort to renovate the fields, which will be used for competitive football, soccer, baseball, softball and physical education classes. The renovation was made possible by a $400,000 gift from the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation (NADCF) to the Brees Dream Foundation, which was established by Drew Brees and his wife Brittany in 2003.

“The generosity of the National Automobile Dealers Association and its foundation helped make the restoration of the athletic fields at Lusher Charter School a reality,” Brees said in a written statement. “They stepped forward when needed, and the fields will make an impact for years not only on young people in the Lusher school family, but also children throughout that neighborhood.”

“We all owe NADA a debt of gratitude, and there is no greater demonstration of how private companies working together can make a difference in the community,” Brees added.

Ford’s Mulally and Toyota Motor Sales USA Become ‘Ambassadors’ of NADA’s Charitable Foundation

Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally and Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. have become “Ambassadors” of the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation (NADCF).

“Ford Motor Co. has always been a good corporate citizen, so it’s just fitting that Mr. Mulally become an Ambassador himself,” says Annette Sykora, an NADCF board member and past chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association. Sykora is a Ford and Chrysler dealer who represents North Texas on NADA’s board of directors.

Last year, NADA President Phil Brady accepted a $20,000 gift on behalf of NADCF from Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A, of which $10,000 was donated to the foundation, thus making Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A an Ambassador of the program. And the remaining $10,000 was donated to Northwood University.

Peter Blackstock, a Toyota, Lexus and Scion dealer who represents Northern California on NADA’s board of directors and who is a foundation board member and Ambassador, says he hopes Toyota’s ambassadorship will make more industry leaders aware of the program and its many benefits to organizations in need all over the country.

Holman Automotive Group Spearheads Effort to Inspire New Jersey Youth

The “Make A Promise. Keep A Promise” campaign launched (in November) aims to raise $2 million in corporate sponsorship over the next three years and encourage suburban employees to volunteer in mentoring programs. Frank Beideman, vice president of resource development for the Pennsauken, N.J.-based Holman Automotive Group, is spearheading the initiative. Beideman said he was eager to support the initiative by the nonprofit group known as UrbanPromise, which opened a small summer camp in Camden more than 22 years ago. Beideman says he’s seen firsthand how it helps Camden children succeed. His family began mentoring high school students five years ago. “All the revenue that is generated really goes to the kids of Camden,” Beideman said. “We really think that’s a great cause.” UrbanPromise has grown to include private K-12 schools, job training, outdoor clubs and a host of other recreational and educational programs -- all free or heavily subsidized for Camden youth. Now, the organization is hoping to expand even more by soliciting help from South Jersey businesses.

Charitable Foundation Seeks New Ambassadors

New-vehicle dealers are consistently among the greatest supporters of charitable organizations in their communities. Despite the tough times, dealers can still make a lasting impact by becoming an Ambassador of the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation (NADCF). “There is no better way to say ‘Thank You’ to your community for their support of your business than to become an NADA foundation ambassador,” says Dale Willey, chairman of the Ambassadors program. With a one-time contribution of $10,000, individuals can become ambassadors and provide an organization of their choice $1,500 every three years forever. The $10,000 donation is also tax-deductible. There are now nearly 500 foundation ambassadors. The newest ambassadors are Ford Chief Executive Alan Mulally and Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. Other industry-related ambassadors are AutoNation Inc. and the Ford Commercial Truck Dealers. For more information about the program or to sign up, visit www.nada.org/cf.

Mallon: Taking Kindness Coast to Coast

Auto dealers traditionally have been among the most generous donors to charities in their communities. In the mid-1970s, Bob Mallon, a Ford dealer in Tacoma, Wash., and a director of the National Automobile Dealers Association, wondered: What if NADA could channel those philanthropic urges nationwide? The result was the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation. Since its creation in 1975, the foundation has raised more than $10 million in dealer contributions and donated that money to educational, health care and emergency relief programs across the country. Mallon says he is especially proud of the Ambassadors Program, which includes dealers who donate $10,000 to the foundation. In return, the foundation agrees to make a $1,500 grant to a charity of the ambassador’s choice every three years -- forever.

Animal Shelter Shifts Focus Back to Adoptions

KILLEEN, Texas -- Toyota of Killeen has been a long time supporter of The Second Chance Animal Shelter which finds homes for unwanted animals. So, when smoke from a fire killed 99 cats and 12 dogs and closed down the shelter, Toyota of Killeen immediately joined other members of the community to help. The dealership donated money and supplies in a volunteer effort spearheaded by Melissa Baker, a dealership employee. On his national radio show, “The Huckabee Report,” former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee saluted the volunteers as part of “Huck’s Heroes,” a segment that honors heroes in the community. As a result of the quick action taken by the volunteers in the community, The Second Chance Animal Shelter was expected to reopen quickly.
